Research tasks
The Marine Chemistry Department conducts basic research into the chemistry of the oceans and participates in environmental monitoring in the Baltic Sea. The spatial and temporal variation as well as the transport and transformation of chemical substances in marine ecosystems are studied, primarily in the Baltic Sea.

Our work focusses on both the natural and anthropogenic constituents of the oceans, such as gases, nutrients, and the carbonate system, as well as heavy metals, petroleum hydrocarbons, and organohalogen contaminants. In addition to the aqueous and solid phases of the water column, we investigate the adjoining atmosphere and sediment compartments.

The aims of this research are to quantify and balance material fluxes and to identify long-term fluctuations in chemical parameters which are important prerequisites for developing models of the marine ecosystem. These activities are highly interdisciplinary in nature and are imbedded in the inter-departmental research program of the institute.
