 Scientific framework of QuantAS

(Quantification of water mass transformations in the Arkona Sea)

Quantas was created as a scientific framework with the aim of a better understanding and quantification of the water mass transformation in the Arkona Sea. The framework is based on three vital parts

1. Quantas consortium

2. Quantas-Nat project

3. Quantas-Off project.

The region of main interest is the Arkona Sea – one of several basins forming the Baltic Sea:

It is a hot spot of water mass transformation within the Baltic Sea . Most of the mixing of highly saline water entering the Baltic Sea from the North Sea with the brackish ambient water takes place in this area. The density and oxygen content of the water mass produced by the mixing processes are particular important because of their strong influence on the ventilation of the Baltic Sea deep water.
